Fitting with policy

The SE Checklist assists in the delivery of the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South East by identifying a range of sustainability issues covered in the SE Plan, and enabling users to assess to what extent a design proposal will deliver on each issue.

The SE Plan's context is set through the Integrated Regional Framework (IRF). The IRF provides an essential part of the context for the SE Plan. It establishes a shared regional vision and set of objectives which all organisations in the region should use to try and achieve more sustainable development. It reflects overall Government policy on sustainable development but sets the policy in a distinctive South East context." (Para 6.1 Core Document draft RSS)

As far as possible, the Checklist has sought to integrate other useful tools and measures to provide a "one stop shop". However, if it went into detail on every issue it would be extremely unwieldy and time consuming. We have provided links to other policies and tools elsewhere on this website.

The Checklist does not negate the need for other statutory appraisals (such as EIA) to be provided. However an EIA can be used to answer some questions within the Checklist.

Whilst the Checklist has been designed to reflect RSS policy (which legislatively will form part of local planning policy), it can be tailored to reflect local policy and the findings of SEA/SA for local plans. However, links to other policies and tools elsewhere, have been provided on this website to enable further detail to be accessed.
